Answer to the question:
Human history carries the evidences of emergence of various pandemics in different times even though the consequences were not sane. The occurrence of global pandemic in the form of novel coronavirus have changed the normal functioning of world; it created a more divided, conflicting and nationalistic world. It created many problems in our society like unemployment, closure of educational institutions, and pressure on public health care systems etc. With loss of livelihood and damage of global supply chain; the poor economies across the world suffered a lot in comparison to advanced and developed economies.
1] Impact on Education:
I, being a student of economics, can feel the impacts of COVID-19 on the educational sector of a country. With the closure of classes; the smooth process of learning has been affected adversely. However, in advanced economies or developed countries, with the help of technology (Basically through online mode of education), the authorities tried to supplement the conventional mode of education. But in the poor countries, with lower income and technological advancement; the smooth process of educational attainment more or less have got hampered. Moreover, the poor families in the underdeveloped countries basically depend on public educational institutes for the nutritional intakes of their children. With the closure of schools, the global pandemic also hampered the health conditions of poor children indirectly. While many big universities and colleges have successfully adopted online mode of education for the students; but many small universities failed or inefficiently adopted online mode of education. I personally find that online education can not completely substitute the traditional mode of learning. This is because; in the classrooms the students learn many things (which may not exists in their text books) in close proximity which cannot be complemented through online mode of education. However, for the short run; the process of online education has to be promoted to control the spread of novel coronavirus. For effective learning, I think, at present the course creators should work with the respective IT departments of universities to make their courses compatible with online mode of education.
2]. Impact on Employment:
Similarly, I have also noticed that with the closure of production bases; millions of people have lost their jobs and became unemployed. In this context, the migrant workers can be regarded as worst victims of COVID-19. With no alternative source of livelihoods, many states have witnessed reverse migration of workers. With the loss of jobs, many people even took their lives under mental pressure. But the case is not that much serious with the workers of formal sectors. With many workers adopting the “work from home” approach ditched their daily commutes to work from bed rooms. I think this “work from home” approach will provide many ideas for business houses that to be adopted in future. This is because; the “work from home” could replace the traditional “9 to 5 set up” all together. Moreover, I find this approach is more equitable for women. Even home office stipend could be considered as perk in future by the business houses or corporate firms.
3]. Impact of mental health and the role of family:
As this global pandemic has created many adverse impacts on society; it essentially leads to mental distress or mental health problems. Measures such as social distancing, business or school/college closures lead to greater isolation and eventually resulted in many mental health problems. With the job loss and increasing uncertainty; a large section of people in today’s world fall into the grips of depression and anxiety. I think, in this crisis, sound family time can play an important role against depression or anxiety. With closure of business or classes, I think that we have sufficient time with us to share our emotions or feelings with our closed ones.
But definitetly its not all doom and gloom. I think, after a few months, we will back to our normal lives once again with significant innovations and modification in our lifestyles.
