In a few sentences, define paternalism and explain how the it is used in the professions. Use real life examples if possible and how it is justified because of client incompetence.
Paternalism in very simple words can be defined as a limitation or we can say restriction on the autonomy or liberty of other individuals in order to do good to that person or to prevent that person from harm.
Paternalism is used in professions such as in the medical field . We can take examples from the medical field . Let us assume a patient is unable to make decisions about the course of treatment . Then the doctor takes the decision which in his understanding is best for the patient . Similarly in the law professions the laws are made by the law makers like wearing a seat belt in order to promote the good of the individuals . The individual does not have any role in law decision making . It can be justified in case of client incompetence by using an example when an individual is not in the condition to take a description for himself . For example in a case of life and death individuals who are badly injured are not in the condition to make decisions then the doctor has to do what is best for the patient . Here the incompetence of the client leads to paternalism .
