Question

In: Chemistry

Calculated pH of a solution that contains 0.30 M NH4OH

Calculated pH of a solution that contains 0.30 M NH4OH

Solutions

Expert Solution

NH4OH is weak base

Kb = 1.8*10^-5

             NH4OH --------------------> NH4^+ (aq) + OH^-

I              0.3                                    0                   0

C           -x                                        +x                +x

E          0.3-x                                    +x                +x

         Kb   = [NH4^+][OH^-]/[NH4OH]

           1.8*10^-5   = x*x/0.3-x

          1.8*10^-5 *(0.3-x)   = x^2

             x = 0.0023

      [OH^-]   = x   = 0.0023M

     POH   = -log[OH^-]

               = -log0.0023

                = 2.6383

    PH    = 14-POH

               = 14-2.6383

                = 11.3617   >>>>>answer
