1. The anterior portion of the palate is referred to as the _________ palate.
2. What is the location and the function of the soft palate?
3. The malar bone is also referred to as the ________ bone. What is the vomer, and where is it located?
4. What is another name for the facial nerve? Which facial muscles are innervated by the facial nerve?
5. Which four muscles control movement of the lower jaw?
6. When does embryologic development of the face occur?
7. Where is the orbicularis oris muscle situated? What is its function?
8. Describe the components and features of the TMJ.
9. What is the ramus of the mandible?
10. What are the two main functions of the orbit?
1. The anterior portion of the palate is referred to as the hard palate.
2.The soft palate is located at the posterior of the palate in mouth (behind the hard palate). The function of soft palate includes the involvement in swallowing, sppech breathing.
3.The malar bone is also referred to as the Zygomatic/cheek bone. The vomer is the facial bones of the skull, It is located in the medial line and articulates with various bones named as maxillary bones, palatine bones, ethmoid and sphenoid bones.
4.The facial nerve is called as cranial nerve VII. The facial nerves innervates the facial muscles named as frontalis, orbicularis oculi, orbicularis oris, platysma and buccinator muscles.
5. The four muscles control the movement of the lower jaw are - masseter, temporalis, lateral pterygoids and medial pterygoids muscles.
6.The embryologic development of the face occurs between the 6th and 8th week of embryogenesis.
7.The orbicularis oris muscle is situated around the lip area of the mouth. The function of orbicularis oris muscle is puckering or pursing of the lips.
8.The main components of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) are - articular surface of the temporal bone, mandibular condyles, articular disc, temporomandibular ligaments, sphenomandibular ligaments, stylomandibular ligaments and lateral pterygoids muscles. The TMJs are made up by the temporal bone of cranium and articulation of mandibular bone. The TMJ plays a role in speech, breathing and eating activities and have involvement of the TMJ, soft tissue and teeth.
9.The ramus of the mandible is the processes present on left and right side of the lower jawbone, it provides the attachment to the masseter muscles.
10.The two main functions of the orbit - a. It protects the eye by surrounding them b. It helps in functioning of the eye.
