According to Bill Kovach & Tim Rosenstiel in The Elements of Journalism, Revised and Updated Third Edition; what are the rights and responsibilities of the citizens, when it comes to journalism? What role do they play in the field of journalism?
In this age of social media, citizens are rushed with all sorts of news and information, at some point they know more than an average journalist of the different aspects of a piece of information or news. The citizens react to news and information by commenting, blogging, and posting pictures online. A journalist is no more a person to decide what information they want to share with the citizens, or should the citizens know. Now, it is the citizens who decides what they want to know. Now, this is the responsibility of the citizens to choose wisely the information that they want to know, because there's a relationship between the suppliers of news and the citizens who consume them. If the citizens choose appropriately then the news that is fed to them would be authentic and true. And if they choose more of gossips and sub standard news, the more of such news will be circulated. Thus, according to Bill Kovach and Tim Rosentiel the rights of citizen is have authentic and valid news and react to them, and the responsibility lies while choosing standard and authentic news and information to keep up the level of journalism.
