IN SEARCH OF PROFITS IN CHINA

China has a population of about 1.4 billion; but that does not translate to as many customers; number of those that can afford the products of foreign companies would not reach 100 million. Still, foreign invested companies are quite profitable in China; they account for about 15% of the profits of industrial companies in the country. Supported by high income inequality in the country, there is big demand for luxury goods, mostly met by foreign firms. Because of one child policy, sectors that cater to children’s needs are expected grow and be increasingly profitable in the coming years. The number of internet users in China is more than 900 million and rising, which creates great potential for e-commerce. Currently, in total dollar volume of e-commerce transaction China comes second in the world after the US. However China is number one in the world in the total volume of mobile payments, a big share of which is related to e-commerce transactions. One thing that makes doing business in China easy is the uniformity of the language, culture, economic and political conditions through China. The biggest problem with doing business in China however, is the fact that foreign companies have to form joint ventures with Chinese companies to do so.
