The nature versus nurture debate of why crime exists is one that will never cease. The argument represents the idea that an individual’s environment is the primary reason why individuals commit crime, versus the belief that crime occurs and is fostered by biological traits that eventually lead to criminal behavior. However, it appears that a combination of environmental and biological factors shape individuals to become what they are and determines the mindset of one that chooses to engage in criminal behaviour.

Research in the field points towards the following trend: individuals maybe born with a hereditary or genetic predisposition for criminal behaviour. This places them at a higher risk for criminal behaviour compared to those born without this predisposition. However,in the presence of environmental factors and stressors, these innate traits may surface and result in criminal behaviour.
