Bureaucracy definition: what is bureaucracy?
An organization that is process intensive and focuses on requirements, accountability and division of labor by maintaining clear hierarchies can be characterized as bureaucratic. Max Weber argued that this structure is essential for large organisations that want to exercise accountability on a granular level.
The main elements constute bureaucratic management:
The managerial process constitutes six components management, planning, organizing, leading, controlling, and chain of command.
Management consists of aligning individual goals with organization
Organizing involves facilitation of resources to ensure the goals and objectives are achieved of arranging personnel and
controlling deals with efficiency and productivity as managed within the organization
Chain of command is indicative of authority and influence. Chain of command constitutes top management, mid management, and then the doer force
The key difference between a policy and procedure is in the result.
Workplace conduct for instance, would fall into policy, but on boarding a new employee falls under process/procedure.
Policies are meant to remain static and are meant to define what and why. Procedures aim to describe how, when, and who of processes.
Ex A company guarantees 24 hour delivery. What are the policies and procedures that can be applied here?
The primary policy is the delivery of the order within the said time as this is a commitment to the customer and should be binding.
” This policy is broken into two parts
1- preparing for delivery and dispatch which is undertaken by staff
2- management monitoring the process
