Rubin’s Love Scale and Rubin’s Liking Scale (search it)

Is this test measuring the construct of love?

How would you go about validating this measure?

How does it relate to discriminant validity? (e.g., how does it discriminate between love and like? Love and lust? Love and hate?)

How does it relate to predictive validity? (e.g., what would be outcome measures for how much a couple is in love?)

Rubin love scale includes the follwoing analysis as follows:

It gives the analysis of love between the unmarried couples which can later turn into marriage if the relationship is handled in a proper way. It gives an analysis of the amount of attraction of a male for a female with compassion. It categorises emotions into three types namely:

1) affiliation and dependent relationship requirements in life.

2)tendency to help others in terms of need and requirements in life.

3)orientation and direction towards exclusiveness and absorption in life.

There were groups of various items which contained the details about expressions of emotions, love, life, sharing of thoughts, friendships and same views regarding their thinking and perceptions in life. They are scaled on a scale from 1-9 as given in the table above. It gives the statistical analysis of the details of relationships among husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, father and mother with alpha index values for the different types of relationships and emotions in life. Coefficient alpha for Rubin scale is 0.84 for females and 0.86 for females. Coefficient scale for Rubin liking scale is 0.81 for women and 0.83 for men. The correlation for women was 0.39 and for men was 0.61. The emotions of people were recorded on an index which included liking, somewhat liking, little liking and no liking at all. It can discriminate between love, liking, obsession and hate by analyzing the alpha values on scale. It assumes few hypothesis as the amount of time for affection between a boy and girl is less when they are together as compared to when they are not together.

The predictive validity depends upon the scale of index values according to the scale of feelings and Behavior of love based on :

  • verbal affection.
  • self-disclosure of important and personal facts and details.
  • unexpressed feelings.
  • expressed feelings.
  • compassion.
  • obsession and desire with excessive liking.
  • possession and intimacy.
  • divorce and love again

All of these are based on specific values with strong desire to accomplish everything in life.
