A 300 word report on the Reconquista and why it's important historically
RECONQUISTA
Reconquista refers to the series of battles that happened between the Christian kingdoms and Muslims to recapture the Iberian Peninsula territories that were occupied by the Muslims during the 8th century. The Muslims Moors were the people who lived in northern African countries such as Morocco and Algeria. During the 711, the Moors invaded the Iberian Peninsula by crossing the Mediterranean sea. On the following seven years they further invaded majority of the Iberian Peninsula.
Due to this, the Reconquista began in 718, and in the battle of Covadonga which was fought between the Christian Asturians and the Muslim Moors, the Christian King Pelayo of the Visigoths defeated the Moors. These series of battles lasted for several years until Spain was united when the Argon's King Ferdinand and Castile's Queen Isabella I got married in 1469. In 1492 the Reconquista came to an end following the fall of Granada where the Moors surrendered to the King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella I. After the Reconquista the Jews and Muslims were forced to convert into Christianity and if not they were expelled from Spain.
The Reconquista was historically important because it is a major historical event that represents the period of 770 years of battles because of which the Christians reconquered their Spanish territory from the Moors. Though this war started as a claim for territory, it was changed in to a war of desire for religious liberation. The end of Reconquista was followed by a huge number of forced conversion, death, and immigration of the Muslims.
