synthesis paper about Ethical Issues and challenges in Maternal and Child Health Nursing
Maternal and child health issues include several issues in which a woman act in a way that may either cause harm to her foetus or is disfavour most of the members of society.
Conflicts arises between a mother and fetus occur only when the mother’s needs or behavior may cause injury to the foetus. The most common causes involve abortion, assisted reproduction (artificial insemination, invitro fertilization and embryo transfer, and surrogate parenthood), selective reduction in multifetal pregnancy, intrauterine treatment of foetal conditions, substance abuse, and refusal to follow the advice of health care workers.
Health care workers and society often respond to such woman with anger rather than giving her support.
1)Abortion - The legal rights always protect
the right of all woman to make their own
decisions about her reproductive functions based on her moral and ethical beliefs. But there is always a pro- life group that strongly opposes that abortion is murder and neglects the childs the basic right to life. Nurses have several duties that cannot be ignored in the conflict about abortion.
• They must be informed about the complexity and seriousness of the abortion issue from a legal and an ethical standpoint and know the regulations and laws in their residing state
2)Informed consent - It is implication of nurses to ensure that the consent form is completed with signatures from the parents or legal guardians if the client is minor .
3)Confidentiality-This law promotes the proper security and privacy of health care and health information of all clients should be kept confidential.
4)Foetal injury - In case a mother’s actions cause injury to her foetus, then it always question about whether she should be prosecuted for her action legally and should bear ethical implications.
5)Infertility treatment -Most techniques are now a days more successful, but ethical concerns include the high cost and overall low success of some infertility treatments.
6)Intrauterine treatment of foetal conditions-These new treatments have raised several ethical and legal questions about maternal and fetal rights.
