At the end of the electron transport chain, all of the following statements are correct, EXCEPT:
Select one:
a. produce most of the ATP needed for life
b. The oxygen taken in during respiration is used to produce carbon dioxide during the Kreb cycle.
c. oxidize glucose metabolites to produce carbon dioxide, water and ATP
d. the electrons combine with oxygen and protons to form water
WRONG STATEMENT :
b. The oxygen taken during respiration is used to produce carbon dioxide during the Kreb Cycle.
The oxygen taken during respiration is used to break apart food molecules. The energy released by this reaction is stored as chemical ATP.
AEROBIC RESPIRATION
Glucose +Oxygen produces Carbon dioxide +water +Energy
This can be divided to three main stages
1.Glycolysis:
Glucose is split into 2 molecules of pyruvic acid, produces 2 ATP and 2 NADH,
2.Krebs Cycle :
Here pyruvic acid is break down to produce carbon dioxide, produces 2 ATP and 6 NADH.
3.Electron transport chain:
Produces most of the energy (34 ATP molecules ). The ETC chain works as a proton pump, it pumps hydrogen ions through the membrane, and only allows them back through a protein (ATP Synthase) which makes ATP. The electron transport chain uses oxygen at the end of the chain (electrons combine with hydrogen ions and oxygen to produce water molecules).
