As we have seen this week, one of the more controversial issues with the representation of American Indians is the use of the terms "Indian" and Indian-related names with high school, college, and professional sports teams. Is this an issue that needs to be addressed, or is it something that people should just move past and ignore? Do you think these names should be kept to keep the tradition and merchandise relevant today, and/or that the names actual honor American Indians? If so, how? Conversely, if you feel these names are offensive and need to be changed, explain why. Also, if "Indian" related mascots should be changed, should other racial and ethnically-related team names, (such as Notre Dame's "Fightin' Irish") be changed as well?
Is this an issue that needs to be addressed, or is it something that people should just move past and ignore?
Answer: We Americans are always known for our love, care and respect for each other. So, we should not see it as an issue, rather we all should let this name "Indian" in use.
Do you think these names should be kept to keep the tradition and merchandise relevant today, and/or that the names actual honor American Indians? If so, how?
Yes, these names keep the tradition and relevant today as well as it shows honor for American Indians. Reason: These names keep tradition alive and through it we pay respect to native American Indians. It shows that our country, America is a land of diversity, different cultures and races and we treat equally to all.
Conversely, if you feel these names are offensive and need to be changed, explain why.
No, I don't feel these names offensive as explained above.
Also, if "Indian" related mascots should be changed, should other racial and ethnically-related team names, (such as Notre Dame's "Fightin' Irish") be changed as well?
No, there is no need to change any cultural names and aspects as I already explained above. We, Americans, just need to celebrate our diversity and greatness to accommodate every race, culture, belief, thought.
