Read the summaries and analyses of both sides about the Cape Wind project. If the decision was in your hands, would you approve the project? Why or why not? Do you believe this level of controversy is unique to Cape Wind, or is it a preview of the challenges future wind projects will face?
Offshore wind projects are no doubt valuable to the environment. They are clean energy. They are renewable and sustainable. In spite of that the Cape Wind project was terminated. The major concern was, mostly, as because this was on the Nantucket shoal. The island, once whaling capital of the world, made famous by the author Herman Melville in his cult classic Moby-Dick (1851). And now it is apple of the eye for the American tourism industry. Just off the coast of Cape Cod, this is a perfect place to spend some vacation time away from the busy city life. This one island town brings millions in terms of tourism. Thus the primary issue was, the big "one third of half-a-mile wing spanned turbines and so many of them would be an eyesore the random visitor. Also, those big turbines will kill lots of aboriginal birds, and that way will disturb the local ecosystem balance. These will bring down the market value of this vacation island. Morover, the local fishing authorities claimed that their buisiness will be hurt if this project stays on. Now here is the catch! The Massachusetts Audobon Society deemed the project to be safe for birds in 2006. The project need not to be built on fishing waters. The far deep towards the ocean the better for offshore wind projects, because less obstructions, even stronger winds. This project not only was approved as environment friendly but would have also created lots of local employment opportunities. Given me the chance to decide on its' fate, I would have definitely endorsed this project for all the right reasons. These obtuse oppositions are always there for all the future wind projects. I just hope that they might be dealt with more prudently in future.
