Data is the new oil for the rapid digital transformation of
global industries. In November 2018 a research firm IDC predicted
that the global datasphere could increase from 33 zettabytes in
2018 to 175 zettabytes by 2025.
There is a wide range of factors for exponential growth in
Internet usage.
- Social media: People are spending more time on social media. In
2012 the average time spent by a person on social media is 90
minutes in 2020 it is grown up to 200 minutes. Alone facebook
produces 4 petabytes of data per day. It means 120 petabytes every
single month.
- Internet of things: All the major cities are converted into
smart cities. People are using smart devices like Alexa, google
home produces a massive amount of data every single data. It is
estimated that the IoT devices generate 79.4 zettabytes (ZB) of
data up to the year 2025.
- 5g connection: It generates 2.6 times more traffic than the
average 4g connection and takes up to 15% of total mobile traffic
by 2023.
- An online Streaming platform like Netflix, Hotstar consumes a
lot of data. On an average 3GB is required for 1-hour
streaming.
- Gaming industry: Games like pubg and many more utilizes 40MB to
300MB per hour. At an estimate, 60 petabytes of data will be
generated by 2025.
