Suppose you have one data set with 30 cases, each case representing a student in this class. The following variables are available: age, gender/sex, race/ethnicity, class (freshman, sophomore, etc.), and GPA.
For each of the 5 variables, explain (1) the level of measurement and (2) the measures of central tendency available to them.
Race:
Gender/sex:
Race/ethnicity:
Class:
GPA:
(1) Race : Here the level of measurement is nominal as it is a qualititative variable not quantitative variable and the measure of central tendency is mode, as mode is used when level of measurement iscategorical (nominal or ordinal).
(2) Gender/Sex : Here the level of measurement is also nominal as it is a qualititative variable not quantitative variable and the measure of central tendency is mode, as mode is used when level of measurement is categorical (nominal or ordinal).
(3) Race/ Ethnicity : Here the level of measurement is nominal as it is a qualititative variable not quantitative variableand the measure of central tendency is mode, as mode is used when level of measurement is categorical (nominal or ordinal).
(4) Class : Here the level of measurement is ordinal as there is an order to this qualititative variable and the measure of central tendency is mode, as mode is used when level of measurement is categorical (nominal or ordinal).
(5) GPA : Here the level of measurement is interval as there is an absolute zero here (0 gpa) and it is a quantitative variable and the measure of central tendancy for the GPA is Mean, which is the average.
