1) Calculate the solubility of Cu4(OH)6(SO4) in a basic solution containing 1.0 × 10-6 M OH- . (Ksp= 2.3 × 10-69)

Solutions

Expert Solution

Cu4(OH)6(SO4) -------------------> 4Cu^2+ (aq) + 6OH^-(aq) + SO4^2-

                                                     4x                      1*10^-6   x

                                                      4x                     1*10^-6       x        [OH^-] = 1*10^-6 is fixed

         Ksp     = [Cu^2+]^4[OH^-]^6[SO4^2-]

       2.3*10^-69   = (4x)^4*(10^-6)^6*x

      2.3*10^-69    = 256x^5*10^-36

               x   = 9.78*10^-8

The solubility   = 9.78*10^-8M

[Cu^2+]   = 4x   = 4*9.78*10^-8   = 3.9*10^-7 M
