Prepare 3 L of 0.2 M Acetate buffer, pH 5.0 starting with Sodium Acetate (MW= 136) and 1 N Acetic Acid (pKa = 4.76). Calculate the amount of Sodium Acetate (g) and amount of Acetic acid (ml).
moles of sodium acetate = molarity x volume
= 0.2 x 3
= 0.6
mass of sodium acetate = moles x molar mass
= 0.6 x 136
= 81.6 g
total moles = 0.6
CH3COOH = x
CH3COONa = y
x + y = 0.6 -------------------------> (1)
pH = pKa + log (y / x)
5.0 = 4.76 + log (y / x)
y = 1.74 x --------------------> (2)
by solving 1 and 2
x = 0.219
y = 0.381
moles of acetic acid = 0.219
molarity of acid = 1N = 1 M
molarity = moles / volume
1 = 0.219 / volume
volume = 0.219 L
volume - 219 mL
volume of acetic acid = 219 mL
