Question 1 - Binomials

Eighty percent of the students applying to a university are accepted. Using the binomial probability tables or Excel, what is the probability that among the next 15 applicants:

  1. Exactly 6 will be accepted?
  2. At least 10 will be accepted?
  3. Exactly 3 will be rejected?
  4. Eight or more will be accepted?
  5. Determine the expected number of accepted students. Remember you are talking about people. Work is required.
  6. Compute the standard deviation.- Make sure you have looked at page 245. Work is required.

Eighty-five percent of UCD students are Irish. Forty percent of UCD students play rugby. Thirty five percent of students are Irish and play rugby. If a student is selected at random, find the conditional probability that: (a) the student practices rugby, given that the he/she is Irish; (b) the student is Irish, given that the he/she practices rugby. An MCAT is an exam that university students take if they are interested in applying to med school. A professor at the University of Guelph quotes the following: "Because only a minority of university students actually take the MCAT, the scores overestimate the ability of a typical university student. The mean MCAT score is about 508, but I think that if all students took the test, the mean score would be no more than 450". This professor gave the test...
