  • A somatic motor neuron innervates skeletal muscle fiber.
  • It releases a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine from its synaptic vesicles through exocytosis.
  • Acetylcholine binds to its receptors on the sarcolemma. This binding causes opening of voltage gated sodium channels that allows soidum ions to enter the muscle fiber.
  • Influx of sodium ions depolarizes the sarcolemma that eventuallt leads to generation of action potential.
  • T-tubules carry action potention to the interior of muscle fiber. As the action potentialr eaches sarcoplamic reticulum, it releases calcium ions into the sarcoplasm.
  • Calcium binds to a protein called troponin. This events brings a conformational change in troponin shapes that shifts tropomyosin away from the myosin binding sites on actin filament.
  • As the active binding sites are exposed, myosin binds to the actin forming a cross-bridge.
  • This leads to a power stroke where myosin pulls actin towards the center to sarcomere.
