Genetic screening is a type of public health program that is systematically offered to a specified population of asymptomatic individuals with the aim of providing those identified as high risk with prevention, early treatment, or reproductive options.Ensuring an added benefit from screening, as compared with standard clinical care, and preventing unintended harms, such as undue anxiety or stigmatization, depends on the design and implimentation of screening programs, including the recruitment methods, education and counseling provided, timing of screening, predictive value of tests, interventions available, and presence of oversight mechanisms and safeguards.

Some of the main advantages of genetic screening is that:

  • It gives a sense of relief from uncertainity
  • reduce the risk of cancer by making certain lifestyle changes if you have a positive result.
  • In depth knowledge about your cancer risk.
  • Information to help make informed medical and lifestyle decisions.
  • opprtunity to help educate other family members about potentials risk.
  • Earlier detection, which increases the chance of a successful outcome.
  • It offers an insight.

I will never recommend anybody for genetic counselling unless any closely related one is subjected to a disease. Maim risk of the genetic testing is the associated emotional, social and financial consequences. It provides only a limitrd information. Genetic testing may increase anxiety and stress for some individuals. testing donot eliminate the person's risk of cancer. Result in some cases may return inconclusive or uncertain.

Most genetic counsellors work in a hospital or hospital, and often work with obstetricians, oncologists and other doctors. Like doctors, genetic counselors can work in a variety of settings and provide different services. They may provide general care, or specialize in one or more area.

  • prenatal and preconception - for those who are preganant and thinking about becoming pregnant.
  • pediatric - for children and their family memebrs.
  • cancer - for patients with cancer and their family members.
  • cardiovascular - for patients with disease of the heart or the circulatory system and their family members.
  • neurology - for patients with disease of nervous system and their family members.

Main techniques used by genetic counsellors may include:

  • Discuss options – After meeting with each patient, the genetic counselor will discuss possible next steps and any options for genetic testing. The genetic counselor will provide a written summary that includes what was discussed in the session, such as personal and family history and explanations of genetics and disorders
  • May advise on genetic tests – Genetic counselors have the expertise to understand the complexity of genetic tests. If you do want to pursue testing, they ensure the correct test is ordered based on your personal and family history.
  • Communicate – Genetic counselors answer additional questions and provide you with ongoing support, work with laboratories to ensure the correct testing is being performed, contact insurance companies to advocate for coverage, notify patients of test results, and communicate with your doctor about tests performed and what the results mean.
