why does sea water make someone more dehydrated? explain how is the nephron loop related to this.

Solutions

Expert Solution

When someone drinks seawater he gets more dehydrated than drinking nothing at all.

Explanation:

When you drink sea water(that contain more Salt than your body),The salty water reaches your stomach ---Intestine---from where it is absorbed to your bloodstream.

This increases the salt concentration in the blood. As we know Kidney helps in the excreation of toxins and wastes, including too much salt ,so the excess salt should be removed through urine.

But human kidneys excrete a certain amount of water when they expel wastes. Also when more Salt is Excreted more Water will be excreted in the Urine.

So as your body tries to excrete the excess amount of salt in our Body through kidneys, there will also more excretion of water in the Urine.

Renal Henles loop Helps in maintaining the concentration of Na+ and H2O in the Urine.Usually,

In Thin Descending limb water is are Reabsorbed(Descending limb is impermeable to ions and permeable to Water).

In Ascending limb of henles Loop,so reabsorption of sodium ion occur -----

But when Salt concentration is very high--------Reabsorption of Na+ will be less-----Reabsorption of Water will be less----More Na+ & More H2O are Excreted------More urine Output---Results in dehydration.
