1.) Predict the coordination mode (tetrahedral, octahedral, greater than 6 coordinate) for each inorganic solid

a.) CsI (cesium iodide)

b.) GaAs (gallium arsenide)

c.) Na2S (sodium sulfide)

2.) Calculate ∆H(f) for NaBr(s). ∆H(L)= 742kJ/mol, ∆H(Nasub)= 107kJ/mol, ∆HD(Br-Br)= 194kJ/mol, Br electron affinity= -325kJ/mol, Na ionization energy= 496kJ/mol

Solutions

Expert Solution

1) It depends on the ratio of cation to anion also you can check using the co-ordination numbers,

Co-ordination Number mode
4 Tetrahedral
6 Octahedral
8 Cubic

a) CsI has cubic co-ordination where ratio is beyond 0.73 and its co-ordination number is 8
b) GaAs has tetrahedral whose ratio is in between 0.225 to 0.414 and the co-ordination number is 4
c)  Na2S has octahedral where ratio is iin between 0.414 to 0.73 and the co-ordination number is 6

2) The formation equation is,
   Na(s) + 1/2 Br2 (g) -----------> NaBr (s)
   ∆H(f) = ∆H(Nasub) + I.E(Na) + 1/2*∆HD(Br-Br) + EA (Br) + (- ∆H(L) )
∆H(f) = 107 + 496 + (1/2 * 194) - 325 - 742 = -367 kJ/mol
