1, A smear is made by spreading the  specimen directly on the glass slide. The purpose of smear is to fix the bacteria on the slide and precautions are to be taken to prevent the sample from being lost during the staining process

Precautions: Don't use scratched microscopes

Avoid making too thick or too thin smears.
