In a study of speed dating, male subjects were asked to rate the attractiveness of their female dates, and a sample of the results is listed below (1equalsnot attractive; 10equalsextremely attractive). Construct a confidence interval using a 95% confidence level. What do the results tell about the mean attractiveness ratings of the population of all adult females?
7, 8, 1, 8, 6, 5, 6, 7, 7, 10, 3, 8
Following formula can be used to calculate the confidence interval:
Where,
X is the sample mean
Z is the z score
σ is the standard deviation
n is the sample size
Given information:
n = 12 ( as male respondents have been surveyed)
Mean = (Sum of all values)/n
Mean = ( 7 +8+1+8+6+5+6+7+7+10+3+8)/12
Mean = 6.333
We can use excel to calculate the standard deviation:
Just put the data into excel and write command =stdev.s and select the data.
Z score at 95% confidence interval is 1.96
Now, using the confidence interval formula, we get:
The confidence interval is (4.959,7.701)
The result tells the males to give attractiveness ratings in the range of 4.959 to 7.701.
