Quenching is often used in the manufacturing and/or heat treatment of magnesium alloys, aluminium alloys and steels.

Explain why quenching is used for each of these three metals, and explain how this benefits the final mechanical properties.

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. Magnesium alloys: 1.To improve mechanical property 2. Conditioning for specific fabricating operation. 3. Stabilize the alloy compisition 4. For anticipated service condition.

2. Aluminium alloys: 1. Redissolve alloying elements to produce solute rich solid solution.2. Stabilize the alloying elements when used in increased amount. 3. Irradicate the voids in the element. 4. Decreasing size of grain boundaries and thereby protecting from corrosion.

3. Steels: 1. To make it more ductile by sacrificing not too much of hardness. 2. Increase its toughness 3. Increase durability and yield stength.

Benefits of getting desired final mechanical properties encourages industries to go with the heat treatment process. Increase in toughness, yield strength, ductility, corrosion resistance are major factors of heat treatment.

Heat treating is often used to carburize metal parts, such as gears. The thickness of the carburized layer is considered a crucial feature of the gear and contributes to the overall reliability of the part. Because of the critical nature of this feature, two different lab tests are performed on each furnace load. One test is run on a sample pin that accompanies each load. The other test is a destructive test, where an actual part is cross-sectioned. This test...
