what is the difference between a Eutectic Phase Diagram and a Peritectic Phase Diagram?
A eutectic phase diagram describes the behaviour of two immiscible solid phases from a miscible liquid phase. Eutectic point is the point where the maximum number of phases are in equilibrium. The temperaure remains constant at this point until one phase disappears.
In a peritectic system, the liquid and solid phase react in fixed proportions at a fixed temperature and gives one soild phase.Peritectic point on a phase diagram is the point where a reaction takes place between a soild phase and the liquid to give a new solid phase. The temperature is constant until the reaction is completed.
Thus the basic difference is that a reaction occurs in the peritectic system.
