Table 2 illustrated a hypothetical urban-rural differences in suicide in Europe
Country Urban Rural
Denmark 80 32
Sweden 50 32
UK 26 18
What explanation can you offer for these urban-rural suicide differences?
Does this information change your views on the reasons for urban-rural? If not, what explanation can you put forward for this finding within rural areas
Why would an urban-rural suicide difference disappear with time?
Ans) In this hypothetical data, there are three countries for which the data is give and it is found that the rate of suicide in urban side of the countries is higher as compared to the rural areas. The urban-rural suicide difference in these countries is clear and this difference in suicide rates in Europe can be majorly due to lifestyle difference, stress related to work and mostly financial trouble in urban which is mostly evident. The lifestyle and way of living is a major explanation which makes the urban people comparatively more stressed and unhappy.
Ans 2) This information does not really change much of the views because no matter what there are suicide rates in both the areas. In the rural areas, most of the suicide are due to depression and lack of resources which makes life difficult. It is found that maximum number of rural suicide rate is in UK as compared to Denmark and Sweden. The disparity is due to lack of resources and proper mental health service and hence due to the increasing unemployment and disparity, they end up their life.
Ans 3) The urban-rural suicide might disappear with time because of increasing mental health problems in the rural areas as well which might put people at high stress. The raise in unemployment and health problems in rural areas and better mental health services in urban areas with better opportunities is likely to end the rural-urban difference.
