In a chemistry experiment , 2ml of 5% sodium hypochlorite, 2ml of 3M KBr and 2ml of 3M KI are individually put to a 150 ml test tube(separately). then 10 ml of cyclohexane is added to all three tes tubes and shaked. then after that the 6M hcl, 8M Hno3, 8M Hno3 are respectively added to the 1st, 2nd and third solutions. After that the test tubes are pit on a hot water bath to increase the reactions for the second and third solitions. Explain thoroughly about the use of the experiment ,all the color changes, the layer formed, everything?
In this experiment, cyclohexane is non polar solvent and its reaction with three different halogens
First test tube contains sodium hypochlorite solution with cyclohexane there is a formation of two layers one is hydrocarbon layer and other one is aqueous layer. Basically no reaction takes place in this to see the color in this reaction we must apply some white background because it is very light yellow color when we shake the test tube
In the second test, reaction of pottasium bromide with cyclohexane again there is formation of two layers and in this case layer formed is basically more darker than yellow color. There is formation of bromide ions.
In the last test tube, reaction of pottasium iodide with cyclohexane gives two layers the one topmost layer is pink to purple color and the lower layer is basically aqueous layer so it is colorless. There is formation of iodide ions.
Through this reaction we can check the reaction of cycloalkanes with three different halogens.
