What is the climax stage of an ecological succession?
- In general, ecological succession is the term used to describe what comes about to occur or happens to an ecological community over time. External factors or disturbances such as natural distasters can disturb the ecosystem which is believed to be at a balanced stage currently.
- Ecological succession is divided into 3 stages: 1) Primary succession, 2) Secondary succession and 3) Climax community.
- Climax stage is the final stage of the ecological succession or ecosystem in which the ecosystem community such as plants, animals and fungi becomes stable over the process of ecological succession and remains relatively unchanged until destroyed by an event such as natural disasters or human interference which results in the mutation of the environment. Studies reported that several rainforests and deserts currently falls into the category of climax stage which are at the risk of being destroyed or going backward in the stages.
