Which of the following statements about vascular tissues is NOT true?
Select one: a. Capillaries are thin-walled and allow substances to diffuse into and out of tissues.
b. Arteries have two layers of tissue and are thick, strong, elastic to accommodate blood pressure pulses.
c. Arteries are thinner than veins and have valves to maintain flow in one direction, prevent back flow.
d. Veins carry blood to the heart and receive blood from capillaries through venules
Answer: "c" The statement about vascular tissues which is not true is ‘Arteries are thinner than veins and have valves to maintain flow in one direction, prevent back flow.’
Explanation: Arteries carry blood under pressure, they have smaller lumen than the veins and they are thicker and elastic to withstand the high pressure. They do not have valves.
Veins have larger lumen than the arteries and the backflow of the blood in veins is prevented by the presence of valves.
capillaries are thin walled and there function is to allow the exchange of material between the blood cells and the surrounding body cells. Hence they allow diffusion of substances like water, nutrients, waste material, carbon dioxide and oxygen etc.
The diameter of the aorta ( which carries blood from the heart to the body) goes on decreasing with its branching. Aorta branches into arteries then to arterioles then to capillaries. From the capillaries the diameter of vessels goes on increasing, capillaries joins to form venules, venules join to form veins and then the vena cava and then blood goes back to the heart.
