predict the impact of small population size upon population genetics. also, explain the advantages of using large population
small population behaves differenly from large population, the population diversity will be low, loss or fixation of alleles, and shifts in allele frequency. It has the risk of extinction. The morlatility rate and reproductive rate resulting unequal sex ,high variance in family size, inbreeding or fluctuating population size.Smaller population will subject to flutuation which leads to extinction. There are a lot of loss of genetic variation in small population. Genetic drift and inbreeding have greater effect on smaller population. Due to inbreeding, the homozygosity level will be high, many deleterious alleles are harmful at homozygousity. Both drift and inbreeding will loss of genetic diversity.
The large population will be less subjected to chance occurances and change allelic frequencies significantly. With large size of population the genetic drift goes to zero. Selection will be so strong and the fixation times are so small. As the population size is so large, inbreeding will be less compared to small population leading to decrease in homozygosity and increased genetic diversity can be observed. Loss of alleles from the population is least affected to the large population.
