7. Two children, a boy and a girl, both exhibit a form of red-green color-deficient vision. This type of red-green color deficient vision is associated with an allele on the X-chromosome (X-linked). The mother has normal vision, but the vision of the father is unknown.

a) Deduce the genotype of the mother and father based on the phenotype of the children?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Red-green color deficient vision is associated with an allele on the X- chromosome (X-linked).

Consider XC  as the recessive allele and X as the wild type allele (normal). Both children are red-green color deficient. Hence the genotype of girl is XCXC  and the genotype of the boy is XCY. The mother has normal vision and she must have an XC chromosome which means she is a carrier. So the genotype of the mother is XXC. Girls always get one of their X chromosome from fathers. So the father must have XC allele. Since the father is hemizygous, the genotype of the father must be XCY(Red-green color deficient vision)

The heavy boy and light girl are balanced on the seesaw. If they both move inward so that each is exactly half the original distance from the pivot, then the 1) boy's end will move downward. 2) girl's end will move downward. 3) seesaw will remain in balance. If the fulcrum of the seesaw is repositioned so each can sit at an END of the board and be in balance, then if each moves inward half way the 4) boy's...

Parents of an 8-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl want to enroll their children in a resistance training program at the local community center. They believe that resistance training will help make their children stronger and faster (and maybe even improve their soccer performance), but they are concerned about the potential for injury. Comment on issues regarding the safety of youth resistance training, and highlight program design considerations that address these concerns.
