You get bit by a zombie. You have 3 antidote pills but they have been mixed in a bottle with 4 aspirin and 5 heart pills. If you take more than 4 heart pills, then you will die. Therefore, you choose 4 pills at random. What is your probability of survival? That is, what is the probability that you randomly choose at least one antidote pill?

Solutions

Expert Solution

solution:

Number of antidote pills in the bottle = 3

Number of aspirin pills in the bottle = 4

Number of heart pills in the bottle = 5

Total number of pills in the bottle = 3+4+5 =12

Number of non-antidote pills in the bottle = Number of aspirin pills in the bottle+Number of heart pills in the bottle=4+5=9

Number of pills chosen at random = 4

Probability that you randomly choose at least one antidote pill = 1 - Probability that you randomly choose all non-antidote(aspirin or heart) pills

Probability that you randomly choose all non-antidote(aspirin or heart) pills

=Number of ways of selecting 4 non-antidote(aspirin or heart) pills from 9 non-antidote(aspirin or heart) pills / Number of ways of selecting 4 pills from 12 pills

Probability that you randomly choose at least one antidote pill = 1 - Probability that you randomly choose all non-antidote(aspirin or heart) pills = 1 - 14/55 = 41/55 = 0.745454545
Probability that you randomly choose at least one antidote pill = 41/55 = 0.745454545

You have just been pulled over for running a red light. In an attempt to get out of the resulting traffic fine, you tell the police officer that as you drove toward the traffic signal the red light was Doppler shifted so much that it appeared green to you. “Ok,” says the officer, “then I’ll ticket you for speeding. The fine is $1 for every 1km/h over the posted speed limit of 50 km/h.” How big is your fine? Use...

The group is planning a set of experiments to study the forces between nuclei in order to understand the energy output of the Sun. To do this experiment, you shoot alpha particles from a Van de Graaf accelerator at a sheet of lead. The alpha particle is the nucleus of a helium atom and is made of 2 protons and 2 neutrons. The lead nucleus is made...

You have been able to get a part time job with a medical physics group investigating ways to treat inoperable brain cancer. One form of cancer therapy being studied uses slow neutrons to knock a particle (either a neutron or a proton) out of the nucleus of the atoms which make up cancer cells. The neutron knocks out the particle it collides with in an inelastic collision. The rest of the nucleus does not move. After a single proton or...

Arsenic-based additives in chicken feed have been banned by the E.U., but are mixed in the diet of about 70% of the 9 billion broiler chickens produced annually in the U.S. Many restaurants and supermarket chains are working to reduce the amount of arsenic in the chicken they sell. To accomplish this, one chain plans to measure, for each supplier, the amount of arsenic in a random sample of chickens. The chain will cancel its relationship with a supplier if...
