Is genetic engineering the only way to increase food production? Proponents of genetically modified crops argue that it is the only way to increase food production enough to deal with population growth. What are the pro’s and con’s to genetically modified crops, and do you feel the pro’s outweigh the cons or vice-versa? Are there alternative ways to increase food production that should be investigated to balance the use of GMO crops?
Well with increasing number of human population there is an increase in both demand and supply, hence there is a need to cope up such growing population and genetic engineering is one of the most prominent and best opt way to need up with it. With the improved quality of food as well as increased productivity via genetic manipulation there is a large and high yield food crops.
It is very true that with genetic engineering there is alteration in the genetic content and it is the only way to increase food production.
Some of the pro's I include:
Faster way to get high quality yield and since there is only genetically alteration. Weed resistance. Long lasting crops for long preservation. Healthy for human as it is nutrient rich compared to old crops.
Cons include:
Since there is little knolknowl about how these alteration to humans there are high risk to reactions that maybe harmful to man.
There are alternative way but they are time consuming and difficult to maintain due to environmental danger like weeds.
