3. Does the data in the table above support your hypothesis for this experiment? Be sure to use
your data in explaining whether the hypothesis was supported or not.
4. Explain how the tooth length trait was influenced by natural selection in your experiment
1. Hypothesis : Short tooth is the dominant phenotype and long trait is the recessive phenotype. Then the F1 parents be Ss and Ss
Let short tooth be represented by homozygous genotype SS and heterozygous genotype Ss. Long ttoth be represented by recessive genotype ss.
Taking the 2 nd generation,
Phenotype | Observed value (O) | Expected value (E) | O - E | (O - E)2 | (O - E)2/E |
Short tooth |
54 | 57 3/4 = 42.75 | 11.25 | 126.5625 | 2.9605 |
Long tooth |
3 | 57 1/4 = 14.25 | -11.25 | 126.5625 | 8.8816 |
Total : 57 | 2 = 11.8421 |
Df = 2 -1 = 1
P value is 3.84. 2 value is greater than 3.84. So the hypothesis is not correct. That means the genes may be linked.
Data does not support the hypothesis.
4. The tooth trait was affected by natural selection. Rabbit with long tooth can only eat carrot . But the rabbit with small teeth can eat both carrot and grass. Due to the less availability of carrot rabbit with small teeth got selected.
