Chamfering is the operation of beveling the sharp ends of workpiece. It is also taper turning operations but limited to certain angles and length. Chamfering is similar to the form turning and is done with a chamfering tool that has its cutting edge at desired chamfer angle usually 30° or 45°. Chamfering is provided for better look to enable ,nut to start freely on threaded workpiece to remove burrs as well as to protect the end of workpiece from being damaged.

Chamfers are also provided to tools in order to reduce stress concentration factor. In chamfering, only radial feed is given and no other setting is required. As the workpiece is rotated , radial feed is provided so that taper will be produced on component. This method is only used for external taper turning as radial feed cannot be provided internally. The accuracy of the taper angle depends on tool. For every seperate angle , differernt form tools are required.

The taper turning operation is used to produce tapered components. There are three methods other than form tool to produce taper turning.

In compund rest method, the compund rest is rotated by an angle equal to taper angle of component. This method is used for both internal and external taper turning operation .

This method can be used for producing any angle for taper i.e . The accuracy can be 0.5°.

During normal turning operations the tailstock dead center is co - inciding with axis of spindle. By moving the tailstock in tranvserse direction , the dead center will get offset and excess of workpiece gets tilted. So, even though the tool is travelling in straight path like in plain turning operation , it produces taper on component.

But this method is used only for external taper turning as both ends of the component are occupied at the centers. Any job which requires offset less than 10mm can be only possible in this operation. The accuracy of this method is 0.1°

During normal turning operation the side ways are kept parallel to guide ways. But for taper attachment method , the sideways are tilted by an angle equal to taper angle of component.

As sideways are tilted, the saddle gets tilted. So, by keeping the carriage stationary as the saddle is moving it produces taper on component

Two identical balls are launched with the same initial speed, but at different angles with respect to the horizontal. They both land at the level they were launched from, and they have the same range (they travel the same horizontal distance). The maximum height reached by one ball is exactly twice as high as the maximum height reached by the other ball. The two launch angles are closest to which of these pairs? (the answer is 55 and 35).
