A gas-filled container, equipped with a pressure gauge, was placed on a cold winter morning in a throttle. After stabilizing the pressure gauge, the absolute pressure of the gas was read to 0.15 MPa. Then the equipment was placed indoors and the container was immersed in a pot of boiling water. The gas pressure was now read to 0.21 MPa. What temperature prevailed in the snow?
Given initial pressure of the gas in the container = 0.15 MPa, Let this be P1
final pressure of the gas in the container = 0.21 MPa,let this be P2
final tempaerature of the gas in the container = 100 °C or 212°F or 373.15 Kelvin , let this be T2
(This temperature is taken because the container was immersed in boiling water. water boils at 373.15 K)
Inital temperature = T1 to be determined.
We have,
Amontons’s/Gay-Lussac’s law, which gives relation between the pressure and temperature of gases at constant volume.
Where P1 and P2 stands for initial and final pressures of the gas respectively in Pascals, and T1 and T2 stands for initial and final temperatures of the gas respectively in Kelvin.
rearranging this equation to find T1 gives,
substituting the known values gives,
T1 = (0.15 x 373.15)/0.21
T1 = 266.53 K or
T1 = - 6.614 °C or 20.095°F.
