A car needs to be towed and is attached to the tow vehicle by a
3.5m long 18mm diameter nylon rope. The tow vehicle is moving
5km/hr and takes up the slack in the rope which results in a sudden
load being applied to the rope. The tow vehicle has a mass of
1.8tonnes and the car being towed is initially stationary. If the
towing vehicle is instantly slowed to 0.5km/hr by the shock load,
(E=2GPa for the rope) determine:
a) The maximum stress induced in the rope. b) The maximum extension
of the rope.
c) The factor of safety if the UTS of the rope is 220MPa
