Multiple Choice

  • rectum.

  • stomach.

  • esophagus.

  • large intestine.

  • small intestine.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer : Small intestine

Almost 90% of the digestion takes place in the small intestine. Almost all the minerals and water are absorbed in this region. Small intestine contains small projections which are finger like ,known as villi. These are again divided into micro villi which increases the absorption of digested food. They are rich in blood vessels also which makes the absorption more efficient. This is why small intestine is the major absorption site in the digestive system of humans.

  • Rectum is last part of large indestine : There is no major absorption occurs in this region since they are specialized for excreation purpose.
  • Stomach and large intestine : only 10% of the absorption takes place in stomach and small intestine together. Hence there is only less than 10% absorption takes place in stomach. and large intestine individually. So we cannot say that stomach or large intestine is the major site of absorption.
  • Oesophagus: In oesophagus, there is no significant absorption that can be noticed. Its main function is to push or aid the masticated food from mouth to stomach.
