Mention some ways or examples to increase Heat Transfer in an internal flow?

Solutions

Expert Solution

There are several ways to increase the heat transfer in an internal flow. By increasing the surface area for convection or increasing the convection coefficient, heat transfer can be enhanced. For example, the surface roughness can be used to increase turbulence which in turn increases convection coefficient. Other examples are tangential inserts which optimize the velocity of the flow near the tube wall, and provide greater area for heat transfer. However, pressure drop must be taken into consideration in order to meet the fan or pump power constraints while trying to increase convection process in an internal flow. Fins elements of proper height also provides greater surface area to facilitate heat transfer.

if you transfer heat energy to a perfectly insulated cup of some liquid (no heat energy can be transferred in or out through the walls) what determines how much the temperature changes? Does it depend on how much heat energy you transfer, how much liquid there is in the cup, what the liquid is, or what the initial temerpature of the liquid is? Which of these factors do you think make a differnce in how much the temperture rises?

Consider the transient heat transfer of a solid object suddenly exposed to an unbounded flow at different temperature. Based on the Lumped-heat capacity model (LHCM), the response time of heat transfer to the solid can be used to determine the convective heat transfer coefficient. Assume that the solid initial temperature, the ambient fluid temperature, and a temperature at the center of solid at a given time (after the exposure) are measurable. (1) Ignoring the radiation, derive an equation to correlate...

Concept 1: Does turbulent flow or laminar flow have a greater heat transfer coefficient? Why? Concept 2: For flow over a flat plate, why does the heat transfer coefficient decrease the greater the distance from the leading edge? (in answering, ignore the effects of flow regime transitions. i.e. assume the flow over the plate is all laminar or all turbulent).
