1. You are a System Specialists at a packaging firm and have been asked to do an analysis on the plant. The nominal average weight of a bag is 100.00 kgs, the acceptable variation is +/- 0.5kg. Below are the statistics collected the past 20 days
day | prod.line 1(kgs) | prod. line 2 (kgs) |
1 | 100.4 | 100.4 |
2 | 99.5 | 100.2 |
3 | 99.6 | 100 |
4 | 99.4 | 99.5 |

20 | 99.9 | 99.6 |
A. Make a control chart/s for these two production lines (use excel or word)
B. Provide an executive summary of the readings from graph 1
C. From graph 1, which day/s should you take interest and investigate?
D. From the two graphs, which one is more stable or efficient, explain?
E. What recommendation are you going to give to the Operations Manager?
Day | product Line 1 | deviations | product line 2 | deviations |
1 | 100.4 | .4 | 100.4 | .4 |
2 | 99.5 | (.5) | 100.2 | .2 |
3 | 99.6 | (.4) | 100 | 0 |
4 | 99.4 | (.6) | 99.5 | (.5) |
5 | 99.9 | (.1) | 99.6 | (.4) |
6 | 100.2 | .2 | 99.9 | (.1) |

17 | 100.5 | .5 | 99.9 | (.1) |
18 | 99.9 | (.1) | 100.3 | .3 |

20 | 99.9 | (.1) | 99.6 | (.4) |
Production Line 1:-
Under production =3.5 kg
Overproduction = 3.5 kg
Net = 0
Standard =+-5 kg
Production Line 2 :-
Under production = 2.7 kg
Over production = 2.1 kg
Net = - (.6) kg
Standard = +- 5 kg
One should investigate , after every three days .
The Output is better for production line 1as there are no deviations
The efficiency is better for production line 2 as on several days there is no deviations.
ADVISE TO OPERATIONS MANAGER :-
Product Line 1 :-
Check the output efficiency of the plant as there are regular deviations
Product Line 2 :-
Efficiency is good , however there is a lot of under production. Find the reasons for high deficiency in production levels
