Compare the normal boiling point of ethylene glycol to that of water, and explain any differences in terms of the intermolecular forces present in each substance.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ethylene glycol has high boiling point comparing to water.

Intermolecular forces increase in the order of hydrogen bonding, dipole dipole bonding and London dispersion. Both water and ethylene glycol contains all three forces, but ethylene glycol contains two -oh groups. So it has 2 location of hydrogen bonding and this results in high boiling point.
