The average sperm count in males is now lower than it was several decades ago. The reasons for lower sperm counts observed in males today is not known. Propose a hypothesis as to why, global, sperm counts are lower today than then were fifty years ago. What experiment could you do to test your hypothesis?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ans.

in the last 50 years there has been a huge increase in use of synthetic chemicals in every field and most important of them are pesticides and herbicides used in agriculture. also all other toxic chemicals used in any field finally reach soil or water. so my hypothesis to explain lowering of global sperm count is increased exposure to various toxic chemicals used particularly in agriculture and which are ingested alongwith food.

Experiment to test the hypothesis -

take two group of rats, one experimental and one control.

expose the experimental group to the suspected toxic chemicals at various concentrations.

the control group will not be exposed to those chemicals, and rest of the conditions will be same.

perform the sperm count and look for the changes in testis of experimental group rats as compared to the control group.

perform statistical analysis to check the significant differences in sperm count among the two groups , if any.

In 1940 the average sperm count per ejaculation was estimated to be 113 million/ml with a normal ejaculate volume equaling 3.40 ml. In 1990 this average had decreased to 66 million sperm/ml of ejaculate. That's almost a 50% reduction! During this time the amount of ejaculation had also decreased down to about 2.75ml. In 2010 it is estimated that the total ejaculation amount is approximately 1.5ml, with the sperm counts being down to 60 million in the average male, and...

Mumps is a contagious childhood disease. A vaccine has been widely available for several decades now, leading to a dramatic decline in the incidence of the disease. Data from the CDC show that vaccination coverage against the mumps virus is now about 90%. Here are some estimates of the transmission parameters for the mumps virus: gamma= 0.08 beta= 0.45     R0 =5.6 a) What is the meaning of R0 in this disease model? b) What fraction of the population should be...

A study conducted a few years ago claims that the adult males spend an average of 11 hours a week watching sports on television. A recent sample of 100 adult males showed that the mean time they spend per week watching sports on television is 9.50 hours with a standard deviation of 2.2 hours. a. In Canada, do young males (Y) weigh more than older males (O) on average? To investigate this question, weights of eighteen males randomly selected from each group were recorded. Summary statistics are given in the following table. Assume weight of each group follows a normal distribution. (If you think the samples are independent, then assume equal variances.) Summary statistics Young (Y) Old (O) Pooled Difference Average (kg) 82.10 75.40 6.70 Standard Deviation (kg) 16.80 14.30 15.60 5.20 What will be...

It is known that in Canada females live longer than males, on average. The Insurance company is trying to estimate the difference for various social groups in different parts of Canada. Two random samples were taken in Ontario, providing life expectancy data at 65 for males and females who worked in Business (see the data file). Use t-test for two means as both distributions are approximately normal. Test the claim that the females live longer than males on average. Provide...

Females, on average, are shorter and weigh less than males. One of your friends, who is a pre-med student, tells you that in addition, females will weigh less for a given height. To test this hypothesis, you collect height and weight of 29 female and 81 male students at your university. A regression of the weight on a constant, height, and a binary variable, which takes a value of one for females and is zero otherwise, yields the following result:...
