What forces drove prohibition enforcement at the national, state, and local level during the "war on alcohol" in the 1920s and why did Americans remain conflicted throughout the period?
THE FORCES THAT DROVE PROHIBITION ENFORCEMENT AT THE NATIONAL AND STATE LEVEL DURING WAR ON ALCOHOL WERE :
1) RELIGIOUS ORGANISATIONS
In USA there were many religious organisations that thought that alcohol consumption is the reason for increasing crime .
They thought that the ban on alcohol would reduce the consumption of alcohol and hence there would be reduction in crimes and spousal abuse .
2) WOMEN SUPPORT
Many women in USA supported the ban of alcohol to reduce the domestic violence .
3) TEMPERANCE MOVEMENT
This movement wanted ban on alcohol because people were very concerned about the negative effect of consumption of alcohol on the health of people . It also affected their mental health and the lives of the families .
Americans remained conflicted throughout this period because prohibition on alcohol led to fall in the tax revenues of the government and led to fall in the economy . Moreover it did not stop the crime . Prohibition also led to black marketing of alcohol . Many people ignored the prohibition of alcohol in america .
