please write an extensive flowchart for finding an unknown compound in organic chemistry lab, with additional details, such as the bp/mp determination, and the functional group analysis

Solutions

Expert Solution

Step;1

The functional group analysis is first done.

  • Tests for Unsaturatuion (bromine water test)
  • Tests for Alcoholic Group( ceric ammonium nitrate test, ester test, iodoform test)
  • Tests for Phenolic Group ( Ferric chloride test)
  • Tests for Aldehydic and Ketonic Groups (DNP test and the aldehydes only give the Schiffs test and the Tollen's test)
  • Tests for Carboxylic Groups (Litmus test)
  • Tests for Amino group (Carbylamines test).

Step :2

The functional group once determined then the melting point is determined at the melting point apparatus. THe melting point determination is the confirmatory test of the determination of the organic molecules.

Step:3

The spectroscopic investigation is done. The most important is the 1H-NMR, IR spectra and the Mass spectra. The Spectroscopic evidence is detremential for the unknown compound analysis.

In an organic chemistry lab we were looking at the substrate and nucleophile effects in Sn2 reactions. Our experimental data showed that 1-bromobutane with 1.0mL of 0.25M NaI in 2-Butanone reacted faster than 1-bromobutane with 1.0mL 0.50M NaI in 2-butanone. Also, our experimental data showed that 1-bromobutane with 1.0mL of 0.50M NaI reacted faster than 1-bromobutane with 2.0mL of 0.05M NaI. These result are the opposite of the theoritcal rate aren't they? From my understanding, the Sn2 reaction rate should...

In organic chemistry lab, we separated a sample of benzion and benzoic acid. We tested the purity of the samples we obtained using a TLC plate. All of our benzoin spots also showed an impurity of benzoic acid. However, our benzoic acid spot did not show an impurity of benzoin. Why is this?
