1.2 Which strategy is not a viable “green” option in the
chemical industry?
(a) Using catalysts to reduce energy consumption
(b) Reducing the number of steps in a multistep synthesis
(c) Maximizing yield
(d) Running the reaction on a smaller scale
Answer: (d) Running the reaction on a smaller scale ---- This is not a viable “green” option
Reasons: whether small scale or large scale is not an issue here, compare to other given options, this option does not reducing any parameter.
(a) Using catalysts to reduce energy consumption: reducing energy consumption is a green chemistry method, when we use catalysts it reduces activation energy thereby produces products in lesser amount of time and with lesser amount of energy consumption.
(b) Reducing the number of steps in a multistep synthesis: This is also green chemistry method, when we reduce number of steps this also saves time and saves consumption of chemicals as well as solvents during extraction of product from crude.
(c) Maximizing yield: if we can get more amount of product (good yield) then we need not to use more amount of reactants to get required amount of product as during workup (extraction) we will use enormous amount of solvents either aqeuous or organic. This is a green chemistry synthesis method.
