a) Explain the difference between "non-native species" and "invasive species".

b) Provide three examples of invasive plants in California, provide a brief explanation for your examples including where they are from originally, how they arrived here and became established, and why they are considered invasive.

Solutions

Expert Solution

a) The non-native species occurred outside of their natural range, but may have positive or neutral effect on the ecosystem, while an invasive species has a negative impact on the ecosystem. The non-native species may not hinder or prevent the survival of other species within the ecosystem, but the invasive species are capable of causing environmental, human, or economic harm because of its ability to spread rapidly and compete with native species.

b) Black acacia, Red gum and Blue morning glory
