Case study: Ian is a CST with several years of experience, working at a large urban hospital. Ian often serves as a preceptor (a CST who trains students during their clinical experience) for surgical Technology students from the local community college. Today, a new student is working with Ian in orthopedic OR. They have just completed positioning the patient when the circulator asks Ian if he will prep the patient's leg while she performs the final check of the video monitors.

Q1- The role of a Certified Surgical Technologist and their limitation are

  • To clean,sterilize the surgical instruments
  • Prepare the surgical room
  • Patient preparation for surgery (positioning, skin preparation such as washing the incision site for surgery  )
  • Keep adequate supply and stock of the equipment needed for surgery
  • Inventory maintenance of the equipment
  • Should handle the specimens
  • Can hold the internal organs during surgery
  • Passes the surgical instrument needed during surgery
  • Count the cotton and gauze during surgery

Q2-

The various roles of OR team involves as the team consists of Orthopedic surgeon, orthopedic nurse, orthopedic technician as well as Anesthesiologists. The roles involved such as:

  • The surgeon performs the surgery of the particular area or the body parts where it is needed.
  • The nurse assist the surgeon and make plans before the surgery and after the surgery. Teach the patient pre and post surgery.
  • The technician provides post operative care to the patient.
  • Anesthesiologists use to give anaesthesia before the surgery.

They are interrelated because every professional involves in the surgery have their own task and work to perform. This includes that every healthcare professionals have their ownroles and responsibilities to bring out successful surgery.

The CST can do basic preparation of the skin in a surgery ,disinfection of skin and limited in doing not more than this.
