There is an upstream Picking department that feeds two downstream Packing departments: Pack Singles and Pack Multis. Those Packing departments feed to a Shipping department that loads the outgoing trucks. 40% of your Pick volume goes to Pack Singles and has a packing rate of 104 units per labor hour (uph). 60% of the Pick volume goes to Pack Multis and has a pack rate of 215 units per labor hour. Your pickers pick both Single and Multi items throughout the day at an overall average rate of 114 units per labor hour. All units that are packed in both processes go through the Ship process at a rate of 570 units per hour. You have 102 people today for all 4 departments and you absolutely must pack 47,880 units in Pack Multis Items to meet a customer promise metric.

Redirect 1: You now need to process all of the Pack Singles Volume in the first 5 hours of the shift. All of the constraints and parameters are the same as the original problem. Again, assuming no breaks and lunches. How do you allocate your staffing for the first 5 hours of the shift for all departments? How do you allocate your staffing for the second 5 hours of the shift for all departments?

Redirect 2: Your Pack Multis Volume reduces to 200 - from which department do you redistribute staff?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Redirect 1:

(a) Shipping dept:
47880 units in total of MultiS item to be given below
Current rate = 570 units / hr (per worker)
complete 10 hr shift
Rate / worker= 5700 units (for 10 hrs)
Number of worker= 47880/5700 = 8.4 ~ 9
(b) Picking dept:
Picking rate (for 10 hrs) = 1140 units / worker
Picking rate for Multis (for 10 hrs ) = 684 units / labor (1140 x 60%)
Number of Labor to gone through aim= 47880 / 687 = 70
(c) Packing department:
Packing rate for Multis (for 10hrs) = 2150
Number of labor to meet the target = 47880 / 2150
= 22.2 ~ 23
hence , the 102 total labor has to be done this way to reach the result(70 + 23 + 9 )

Redirect 2:

This is the most excellent choice to redistribute staff of the packing section of Pack Singles. Here is because there is a necessity to gather 47,880 units in Pack Multis Items to reach a consumer agreement metric. Therefore to accomplish that, every staff need do redirected to choosing and gathering Pack Multis items so that they are transmitted as per consumer specifications in the alloted time span. For this to occur, staff from packing department of Pack Singles must be redirected to arranging department of Pack Multis to accomplish the consumer specifications.

4 . Individual Problems 22-1 Suppose that a paper mill “feeds” a downstream box mill. For the downstream mill, the marginal profitability of producing boxes declines with volume. For example, the first unit of boxes increases earnings by $30, the second by $27, the third by $24, and so on, until the tenth unit increases profit by just $3. The cost the upstream mill incurs for producing enough paper (one “unit” of paper) to make one unit of boxes is...
